Glazing Materials

Clear float glass has previously been the major material used for windows in houses. Advances in glazing technology mean that special glass is now available to control heat loss through the window. This low emissivity (low-e) glass has special surface coatings to reflect heat back through the window. The low-e coatings reflect between 40% to 70% of the heat that is normally transmitted through clear glass, while allowing the full amount of light to pass through. This type of glass is now standard under the Building Regulations for most homes in the UK.

Layers of Glass and Air

The traditional approach to improving the energy efficiency of a window has been to increase the number of layers of glass and air. Double- or triple-glazed windows have insulating air- or gas-filled spaces between each pane. Each layer of glass and the air spaces resists heat flow. The width of the air spaces between the panes is important, air spaces that are too wide have higher U-values and allow too much heat transfer. Highly energy efficient windows are manufactured with inert gases (argon or krypton) in the spaces between the panes because these gases transfer less heat than air.

Frame Materials

Window frames are available in a variety of materials and the frame material can be selected for price, maintenance or visual appearance. Any frame material can produce energy efficient windows if designed correctly. For consumers, it is important to get the most energy efficient window from the frame material that is chosen.

The following factors affect the whole Window U-value:

Note: Always ensure that a quoted U-value is for the whole window and not simply for the glass.

Frequently Asked Questions
Casement Windows

Choosing new casement windows is a long-term investment. Here are answers to the questions homeowners most often ask about style, security, energy efficiency, colours, glass and installation.

Casement windows are hinged windows that open outwards, either from the side or from the top. They are a popular choice for both traditional and modern homes because they offer a clean appearance, practical ventilation and a wide range of design options.

Casement windows suit many types of property, from modern homes to more traditional houses. They can be made with side-hung, top-hung and fixed-pane combinations, allowing you to choose a layout that works for your room, ventilation needs and preferred appearance. The UPVC Company can advise on the most suitable configuration for your home.

Side-hung casement windows are hinged vertically and open outwards from the side, much like a door. Top-hung casement windows are hinged at the top and open from the bottom, making them a practical option for controlled ventilation. The UPVC Company can combine both styles within one window design where appropriate.

Yes. Casement windows can be designed in a range of sizes and layouts, including opening sections and fixed panes. This makes them suitable for small bathroom windows, larger living-room windows and many other areas of the home.

Modern double-glazed casement windows can help reduce draughts and heat loss compared with older, poorly performing windows. Energy performance depends on the complete specification, including the glazing, frame, seals and installation quality. The UPVC Company can explain the available energy-efficient glass and frame options for your property.

Replacing old windows with modern, well-fitted double-glazed casement windows can improve comfort by helping to reduce cold spots and draughts. The UPVC Company can recommend glazing options designed to support better insulation and year-round comfort.

Double glazing, multi-chambered frames and effective weather seals can help reduce the amount of external noise entering your home. This can be especially useful for properties near busy roads, schools or other noisy areas. The UPVC Company can discuss the most appropriate glazing specification for your needs.

Modern uPVC casement windows can include high-security features such as multipoint locking systems, lockable handles, internal beading, reinforced frames and secure hinges. The UPVC Company supplies casement windows designed to provide robust everyday security without compromising on style.

uPVC casement windows are low maintenance and do not need regular sanding, staining or painting like traditional timber windows. Routine cleaning of the frames, glass, hinges and drainage channels will help keep them looking good and operating properly. The UPVC Company can provide practical care guidance after installation.

Yes. Casement windows are available in a choice of colours and woodgrain-style finishes, allowing you to match the windows to the style of your property. The UPVC Company can help you compare traditional and contemporary colour options before you order.

Yes. Woodgrain-effect uPVC finishes can provide the appearance of traditional timber while avoiding the ongoing maintenance associated with wooden frames. The UPVC Company can show you the available finishes and help you select one that complements your home.

Yes. Patterned, leaded, bevelled and decorative glass options can add privacy and character while still allowing natural light into your home. The UPVC Company can help you select glazing that suits the room, your privacy requirements and the style of your property.

Yes. Top-opening casement windows are often a practical choice for bathrooms and kitchens because they provide ventilation while maintaining privacy and security. The UPVC Company can recommend suitable opening styles and obscured-glass options for these rooms.

Yes. You do not need to replace every window in your home at the same time. The UPVC Company can provide a quotation for one replacement casement window, several windows or a complete property upgrade.

Installation time depends on the number of windows, access requirements, property type and whether any additional work is needed. The UPVC Company will confirm the expected timescale following a survey and plan the installation to minimise disruption.

The UPVC Company promotes a no-deposit approach, with payment due only once the installation has been completed and you are satisfied. Your quotation will confirm the applicable payment terms before you place an order.

You can contact The UPVC Company to arrange a free quotation. The team will discuss the style, size, colour, glazing and opening options you are looking for, then recommend a suitable casement-window solution for your home.
